Doula
Assistance during pregnancy, birth and postpartum
The word “doula” comes from the Greek and means “one who serves”. It is this care service that defines their work. With specific training to accompany pregnant people and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, the doula is a professional with a vocation for care and empathetic listening.
Based on scientific evidence, they provide informative, emotional and physical/practical support. They do not replace any family member or healthcare professional, and don’t perform diagnoses or medical procedures.
Within a community tradition, there have always been people dedicated to providing care and support to pregnant people, often carried out by women from their own family.
As the arrival of a new being into the world is accompanied by many processes and transformations, the doula acts as guardian of the well-being of the pregnant person and baby, helping to provide a safe environment for birth, respecting the specific needs and beliefs of each client.
Doula support

The structure of the sessions in terms of content, themes and practices will be structured in agreement between the doula and the client, aimed at meeting the specific needs and interests of each family.
The doula emotionally supports the pregnant person or couple during the pregnancy, offering listening and care for issues that may arise during the different stages of pregnancy.
Offers information based on scientific evidence to help the clients make informed and conscious choices.
She can assist in drawing up a birth plan and planning the management of the postpartum period.
Guides body practices that help relieve discomfort, contribute to better mobility and awaken to greater body awareness.
The doula shares knowledge about the physiology of childbirth that, along with other practices, contribute to a greater awareness of oneself and one's natural physiological capacities to give birth.

At the first signs of beginning of labor, the doula will be contacted by the client and, once the active phase of labor has begun, the doula will travel to the location chosen by the client and will be present to accompany her during the entire period of labor until the early moments after birth.
The doula will do her best to ensure the mother's safety and to provide a calm, peaceful and respectful environment.
The doula provides emotional support to the birthing person and companion, and works to provide physical comfort and ensure that the needs and choices of the clients are being met.
As needed, she can facilitate communication with healthcare professionals to ensure that their clients are getting the information they need to make informed decisions.

In the 1980's, the first study was carried out in Guatemala on the importance of the doula's work through continuous support to women during pregnancy and childbirth. In 2012, a review of these studies was published by the Cochrane Library, in which it was found that the monitoring of a doula:
reduces the use of Pitocin by 31%;
reduces the cesarean rate by 20%;
reduces the use of pain medication by 9%;
reduces by 14% the risk of the newborn needing intensive neonatal support;
increases the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal delivery by 12%;
increases the rate of satisfaction with the birth experience;
increases breastfeeding rates;
contributes to the quality of the mother-baby connection.
This and other studies confirm that the work of a doula (which does not replace that of any health professional or family member) has clear benefits in supporting labor and does not present any risks or contraindications.
